I continued to travel on my Peace Corps issued passport 6 months after COS. When I finally re-entered the U.S., I entered on the PC issued passport. I also had a personal passport, but decided to travel on the PC passport as long as I could just out of curiosity. I could probably still travel on it today, so I don't really know what's up with that procedure.
