[edit] Jobs on the wiki

Without a few key people that have set roles the wiki doesn't have a lot of consistency.

  • News coordinator, capture in country for post every day/week.
  • Contribution monitor, checking the contributions made to the wiki.
  • Site Admin, (User:Willd) handles back end issues regarding the database, software, hosting and speed issues.
  • Site Designer, Builds out the templates for new sections and insurances that pages are interlinked and have a flow between them.
  • PC interfacer, (User:Mike) handles relationship with NPCA, PC, and FOIA related issues.

[edit] Site Admin

  • Set permissions for various articles or sections of the articleson the wiki, example...this "to do list" should be on the wiki only viable to admins?
  • RSS option on each page
  • Listserve subscribe, or a tool so that you can be added to mailing list.
  • Universal Login, Open login
  • Option to make stat counter invisible: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:%24wgDisableCounters

[edit] Article Creation

Articles generated with a template.

[edit] Front Page

  • Highlight the "Article of the month/Week" Celebrate great work the volunteer contributors to the site.
  • Are direct links needed to content pulled from the PC site? ex:http://www.peacecorpswiki.org/History

[edit] Current format, June 1st 2009

  • category tree
  • news feeds
  • twitter feed

[edit] Pros

  • Mostly text based
  • Dynamic with use of Ajax and rss

[edit] Cons

  • Few images
  • cluttered
  • table colors poor

[edit] JUNE 2009 Redesign thoughts:'BY Hayley

This page contains frames:

[edit] TOP

On the top is a banner with the wiki and journals logo to the left and the title "The Peace Corps Wiki" in the center. Under it thought some type of motto or snazzy quotation from JFK would be a nice touch.

[edit] LEFT SIDE

On the left is the navigation toolbar. It is basically broken down into 5 sections:

  • 1) The first has links to 'PCW Homepage', 'All Pages', 'Browse', and 'Random Page'.
  • 2) Second section is titled "Information by..." and under it are links to 'Country/Region', 'Job Sector', 'Time Line/History' and 'Statistics'. -- Each one of these one of those scroll-over type menus. So, for example, you scroll your mouse of "Country/Region" and you will get a menu of the regions, scroll over a region and you get a list of the countries.
  • 3) Third section is titled "Useful links for..." and has 'Returned PCVs', 'Current PCVs', 'Invitees', 'Applicants/Nominees', 'Friends/Family', 'PC Couples', 'LGBT', and 'Just Curious'. These also are scroll-over menus that reveal more choices to help narrow down what a viewer is looking for.
  • 4) The fourth section is a Link to the social networks (intended to be a scroll-over menu, as well)
  • 5) The fifth section has "FAQ" and "Contact us"

[edit] MAIN PAGE

  • The main page I thought should have a picture. It can either be a rotation of pictures or just a random picture that comes up every time someone comes to the main page. I thought that those could be chosen by someone who runs the wiki or nominated by the users of the page. I'd like them to be REAL pictures of people in action instead of those stupid photos PC puts up that are completely staged.
  • Above the picture is a "search" bar.
  • Under the picture is a big fat link to the wiki sister site that says "Peace Corps Journals" and has a 1-2 sentence description. Next to that is something like "Peace Corps in the News" or a featured site or whatever.

Under that, I think the legislation relevant to PC is important.

  • I also think we should create a mission statement for the wiki and put it somewhere on the page.

[edit] BOTTOM

  • The disclaimer is at the bottom.
  • I'd be happy to put some of these ideas into HTML but I don't have an HTML editor on this laptop. Do either of you know of a good one?

[edit] JUNE 2009 Redesign thoughts:'BY Nicolas

  • Just as someone who's dealing with sites and adding pages, I do think it's nice to have the section about "Contribute something" (brief tutorial, add a page on yourself, your site, create an account, etc)
  • It might be good to keep in mind that the Wiki is probably used quite a bit in developing countries by current volunteers - I don't know if scroll-over menus or the "Click on the +" menus are easier to load, but I know that being at an internet cafe and not being able to load a page can be more than a bit frustrating.
  • I like the idea of the picture as the main focus since people seem to be attracted to visual things - we could probably also change it out for text occasionally (for instance the PhD dissertation is pretty cool)
  • Is there a way we can figure out which photos on Peace Corps Journals are most frequently looked at and use those photos?
  • If there are specific types of feedback we're soliciting (for instance, with regards to layout or navigation, etc), maybe we could also make a section/link to that here in the FAQ/Contact Us section - not really its own separate section, but leading to another slightly more detailed page maybe.
  • If we're looking at different interest groups (Couples, LGBT), we might also include 50+ since they have special concerns and there will probably be an increasing number of 50+ volunteers.

[edit] Volunteer Articles

[edit] Volunteer Template

  • Chris detailed some important aspects that could be refined on this form and extension.
  • html link to a popup wiki page for each field.
  • html link to a section on a single help page for the form. Locate this link (maybe behind an "?" icon) to the left of the pulldown box or at the end of the description.
  • Explanation about the different pull down categories. Maybe another html link to the right of the pull down box linking to a different wiki page.
  • Revise categories in pull downs
    • Spell out abbreviations, I don't know what some of the words mean that describe a couple of fields.
  • Getting two boxes to stack on a volunteer page needs to be considered from a format command/perspective.

[edit] Site Articles

[edit] Navigation

[edit] Current:

Africa (region) : Malawi (country) : Malawi Articles (country category page) : Volunteer Group 1964-66 M3 :

Status: submitted FOIA request for group designations.

[edit] Other

  • Create a bar (similar to sitebar or regionbar) showing all active countries for different programs (ie Education, Environment, etc)?
  • Figure out disambiguation pages. In case of region and city having the same name, should the link go to the city, the region or a disambiguation page?

[edit] Country pages

  • Finish each country page redesign, see progress
  • Regroup all subdivisions into each category. Example: "Category:Packing Lists" would have links to all country's packing lists; listed alphabetically by country. This link: Bangladesh goes to Bangladesh's packing list and not to country itself.
    • Diversity and Cross-Cultural Issues
    • Frequently Asked Questions
    • Health Care and Safety
    • History of the Peace Corps
    • List of resources
    • Living Conditions and Volunteer Lifestyles
    • Packing List
    • Training
  • Also create category for 'Possible Issues' of different volunteers. (In parentheses is an online support group that may be able help in editing)
    • Possible Issues for Female Volunteers [1]
    • Possible Issues for Volunteers of Color [2]
    • Possible Issues for Senior Volunteers
    • Possible Issues for Gay, Lesbian, or Bisexual Volunteers [3] / [4]
    • Possible Religious Issues for Volunteers
    • Possible Issues for Volunteers with Disabilities
    • Possible Issues for Married Volunteers [5]

  • a rolling news for each country (RSS), Google sites or alerts, yahoo pipes
  • Moderator for each country. Requirements:
    • Active user
    • Interested in the country
    • Post new content and blog links weekly

[edit] Years

  • Powerful organizer for the wiki. The history of the PC is very important to its present state.
  • Waiting on FOIA docs for implementation (see below)

[edit] Calendars

A couple of calendars can be made (one might be too big for everything)

  1. Calendar of RPCV events, "friends of" groups, reunions, etc.
  2. Official Peace Corps recruiting events on campuses, cities.
  3. Calendar of when groups are leaving for staging/swearing-in/COSing
  4. History of Peace Corps

Sources of information

  1. NPCA website, Friends of websites, regional RPCV websites
  2. Peace Corps main website
  3. Both from contributers, and hopefully the FOIA is current groups are included
  4. FOIA request of cohort data, and main Peace Corps website

[edit] Extensions

  • Multi-language pages
    • Spanish
    • French
  • Google maps
    • Mash-up tool currently not able to dynamically pull from wiki database
  • Sitemap
    • need a cron job to auto submit the site map daily
  • RSS page feed
    • needs to be implemented
  • Page Voting, ranking
    • need a plan to implement

[edit] Interwiki links

[edit] Images

  • Anti spam restricting embedding of external images
  • Link from Flickr only??
  • copyright issues, consider Creative Commons

[edit] Community maps

  • For now see mappc.org

[edit] Recipes

  • Let get some recipes up on the wiki

[edit] Journals

  • Thinking of either adding RSS and/or making each country page two pages
  • Would like it more "Real-time", you can see the most recent journal entries within
    • A specific countries (most recent volunteer entries on top)
    • Sector (invitees only concerns with reading up on Education volunteers, for example; or even Education volunteers in The Gambia)
    • individual volunteers (or group; user specified)
  • Two websites general idea:
    • [6] Blogger; rolling blogs updated section - Journal would not go as fast, maybe even have it as a growing list
    • [7] Dapper page a volunteer made for Lesotho

[edit] FOIA Requests

[edit] Cohort histories

  • Add a timeline for the history of Peace Corps (as a whole). This might be quite big, so maybe break it up not only in countries (as above), but also years and months
    • By year: 1972 . Shows a timeline for all countries of what happened in 1972. When did any group arrive/swear in/complete service. Example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1972
    • By month: January. Going down the list would be swearing in/arriving dates of groups through the 1960-present that happened in January. Example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/March_31 (The PC one could probably be the whole month...)
  • Every cohort would have their own page, M16 for the 16th cohort to enter Mongolia
    • Rough Example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Paterson (government official)
    • The tables for cohorts would include: Arrival date, PST dates, Swearing in Dates, COS date, Group came before (link to that group's page), Group that came after (of if country closed), Assignment, Sector, Number of trainees. Maybe even a picture of the group (if someone would contribute) even two, before after.

[edit] Assignment histories

FOIA granted / supplied
  • Page for each sector, showing which countries had those sectors and when.
  • Page for each assignment
  • For each year show which assignments closed/opened during that year and what countries (see above for timeline by year)

[edit] Statistics

  • Percent of ETs by reason and time in country
  • graph/stats on PCV educational level, and RPCVs
  • how many volunteers marry fellow PCVs or HCNs, by country and/or year

-- The process of getting the stats might be a problem if you don't define what an ET is; they used to change the stats that way. How many extensions for each volunteer employee and each staff employee. Countries PC is active in where the signing government no longer exists(it's okay if the courts are still there). How many have military dictators, are under US sanctions(except for PC) and or UN sanctions for foreign aid. How many are post conflict. How many volunteer employees had to pay for their own ticket home. How many countries FSO's are paid danger or hazard pay PC is in. How many volunteers work for NGOs or programs like Pep Far that they are hired to work at. The cost of the volunteer employee with the new raise and with the new budget. How the Benin volunteer employee died. How many volunteer employees were fired for acquiring aids. How many volunteer employees travel out of country(their country) for PC and how much they're paid for the work. http://community.livejournal.com/peacecorpsfolks/551942.html --
